To Be, Or Not To Be . . .

That really is the question this afternoon, the day before Thanksgiving.

For those of you who know me, you know I do not like to cook or bake. I find it to be a total bore! This proves problematic many an evening since my husband and I do not buy or eat prepared or packaged foods. Luckily, I am married to a man who has decided he likes the job and though his repetoire isn't extensive, he does just fine in my cookbook. (I think it's the "survival instinct" in him)

Can I cook? Well, that's a matter of opinion ... but let's just say that I avoid the chore as often as I can. In fact, I go by the philosophy I found on a greeting card ...

However, last week we made the decision to stay put ... at home ... on Thanksgiving, and came up with an "untraditional" holiday menu. A feast that will delight our tastebuds ... and a day to do as we want that will satisfy our "souls". Sounds good to me! However, I'm determined to throw an apple pie into the mix, so to speak. It's Tom's favorite ... and think it might be a nice gesture, on my part?

Full Disclosure: I've never made an apple pie in my life ... or any other pie for that matter. So honestly, "to be, or not to be" that is the question before me this afternoon. Will this work? Who knows! But I am prepared and off to the task at hand ...

But before I go, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very ...

Bye, Bye Birdie

In my previous post, I mentioned that I recently sorted through many of the pictures I've taken over the last few months (going back to last summer) ... and I came upon this set as well. You see, I had visitors at the Children's Couture Showroom last June; visitors that stayed for four weeks but ones that captured my attention and imagination every day. They were not the kind of visitors that come inside and make themselves comfortable ... instead they chose to "nest" outside and make themselves at home on the storage shed located behind the Showroom ...

To my surprise, I saw an adult robin fly out of this hanger one afternoon. From past experience, I do know that robins will make their nests in the most unusual places ... but a hanging plant? Sure enough ... and further investigation revealed ...

A nest with four blue eggs ...

After two weeks, they "cracked" and four baby birds emerged

For the next two weeks, it was a feedin' frenzy ...

YUMMY!

But one thing I can't figure out ...
Look how tightly squeezed these four birds are in the nest (for two solid weeks). Granted, they are small but really, the nest could have been a touch bigger! Nevertheless, somehow they manage to turn themselves around, day after day ... how'd they do that?

After two weeks of endless "grub" and tight quarters, they were ready to go ...

And go they did, into the wooded grove behind the shed where I'd like to think they were safe until late fall, when it was time to head south for the winter. Next spring I'll be sure to hang the ferns on this shed in anticipation of their return. This is just too cool!

Yes, I suppose I've lived in the country "too long" as I've become engrossed in the nature around us and on our property. And one lesson I've learned over the years is that "we may watch and protect, but don't interfere" ... and life will play out as it should.

Many people work hard these days. I know I work hard. I also know I should learn to play hard(er) ... but when you love what you do, it's often difficult to find a distinctive line between the two.

I was sorting through the numerous pictures I've taken over the last few months and came upon this group which, in my opinion, give a little bit of insight into the work I put into each and every piece at Children's Couture. The dress is one of my best-sellers, Breakfast with Tiffany, well-accessorized with my Cheshire Hat, another popular item from my Accessories Collection.

And please note: I often use a mannequin for "viewing" the proportion and
drape/hang of a garment. This mannequin, which some mistake for an actual child, is shown in the following pictures ... with pencil marks around her neck and arms (which are not "on" at the moment). Please understand that I do not draw on real children.

Moonlight in Vermont ...

Well ... actually I am in New Hampshire but it doesn't matter tonight or early Tuesday morning for that matter. Beginning at approximately 12:30 a.m. ET, we will experience a total eclipse of the moon, also called the Christmas lunar eclipse. This will be the first lunar eclipse to occur on the first day of the Winter Solstice in 372 years. Who knew!
The best viewing time period is around 3 a.m. so set your alarm, get out of bed and look toward the sky ... amazing!

City Sidewalks ...

'Tis the season for magic ... if you believe! No, not the kind of magic created with rabbits in a hat or scarves pulled from a sleeve. Instead, this seasonal magic engages the mind and touches the soul, and comes to us in ways that are truly our own.

I miss the city at this time of year, specifically the glorious holiday windows found at many of the stores, large and small. Designing and creating these worlds of wonder is definitely an art and bestow a spot of magic during the Christmas season. I discovered this magic when I was six, at the corner of 10th and G Street in Washington, D.C. Here stood one of this city's landmarks known as Woodward & Lothrop, a department store affectionately known as Woodies.

Yes, a department store ... that encompassed an entire city block, rose nine stories high and literally provided windows of fantasy and delight during the Christmas season for young and old alike. I was mesmerized, enchanted and never tired of our tradtional "Woodies-holiday-windows-walk-around-the-block" each and every year. The inside wasn't "too shabby" either, where we'd retreat for a warm something to drink and sweet treat in their amazing Tea Room.

Sadly, Woodies closed in 1995 but if you are lucky enough to be in the city, grab your coat, the hand of a child (any age will do) and take a stroll through your shopping district to enjoy this holiday magic ... for me!

Our House ...

Well, the holiday has arrived and we are staying put ... at home ... for Thanksgiving. It's good to be home so please come in, have a seat and make yourself comfortable.

No travel, no schedule, no rush, no agenda, no nothing at all except food, relaxation and only those things we wish to do. I am sooooo looking forward to it.

However, it takes a lot of preparation for a day of "nothingness", especially at Thanksgiving for the menu is a "kicker" ... so many dishes and different ingredients. And though I'm not a cook (many thanks to Annie for providing recipes), I do know how to shop and after my latest excursion to the grocery store (local markets are closed for the season), I've declared that if we don't have it in the refrigerator, pantry or cellar, we don't need it!

Once I put all this away and take care of a few other chores, too numerous to mention ... let the holiday begin!

Where Does the Time Go?

In my previous ramblings about summer, how could I "forget" to mention the event that overtakes my summer each and every year, despite my best attempts not to let it do so? I'm talking about the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen's Annual Fair (aka Sunapee Fair), a nine-day event (beginning the first Saturday in August), located in Newbury, NH at the base of Mount Sunapee, where we are "expected" to create a booth visually equal to the shops on Newbury Street (for those of you on the East Coast) and/or Rodeo Drive (for those of you on the West Coast), which is (hum) near impossible. Did I mention that we are in tents located at the base of a mountain? And what does the land at the base of a mountain do? It slopes in all different directions, of course. In addition to the booth and inventory, a well-supplied stock of shims is absolutely necessary for survival.

Well, there must be some magical pull as I have done this show for 30 plus years (30 plus years?) and keep going back for more. It's because of the people ... all of you out there who have purchased an item (or two or three) from me over the years and return for more ... all of you who are new to the event and stop by to look (in amazement I might add) and chat and buy ... all of you who offer such praise that I am often at a loss for words. Old friends, new friends, familar faces, new faces ... it's you, the people, that bring me back to Sunapee year after year. And I am eternally grateful for your show of support ... thank you!

Now on a personal note ... a Happy Anniversary to us!
A couple of weeks ago I "realized" that I was about to celebrate my 32nd wedding anniversary. How did that happen? Was I old enough to be married for 32 years?
Honestly, where does the time go?

So Long, Farewell (to summer, that is)

FALL officially arrived on
September 22nd, the same evening as the Full Harvest Moon ... and the first time that has happened in 19 years. Who knew!
Yet I feel blue, as blue as a Maxfield Parish blue summer sky, since I hate to say goodbye to summer ... the best season of the year in my opinion. I know, I live in New England and should be happy about the vibrant and colorful foliage, a crispness in the air, the smell of woodsmoke, freshly-picked apples and all that jazz. But as I told my husband a few weeks ago, no football, pumpkins, mums or apple pie until the first official day of fall. And here it is already ... fall ... officially ... so I must relent and make room for those pumpkins, etc.

I don't think there are many of us here in New England that truly enjoy those long hot days of summer, but I am definitely one of them. I'll take 90 degrees and some humidity over 10 below anyday. And why ...

THE FEEL OF HOT SUN on my back ... and face ... and arms ...

SPENDING TIME in our greenhouse planting seeds with Heather (this is in the spring actually ... but still a favorite).

LITERALLY GETTING "DOWN AND DIRTY" in the numerous garden beds we have around here and coming into the house at dusk, totally exhausted (who needs yoga after a day of gardening around here).

MY GARDENING SHOES ... I love 'em but will they hold out for one more year?

EARLY TO RISE (at 5am) ... it's just me and the birds and the sunrise.

SPEAKING OF BIRDS ... watching the robins and phoebes build their nests, lay their eggs and raise their young. The hummingbirds who actually do take a break every now and then. Their favorite hangout ... the head of the Great Blue Heron garden weathervane. Then there are the high-standing egret nests, in a swampy muck of water, that we see on our drive to our favorite restaurant in Wolfeboro ...

GAZING UP AT THE NIGHT SKY, full of stars and perhaps a planet or two, and able to enjoy this amazing sight without "freezing to death".

AND ONCE AGAIN ... the feel of the hot sun on my back ... my face ... my arms and legs. I wish I could "bottle" this for some time in February.

Take the Plunge ...

Well, we are back ... I know, I know it's been quite awhile since the last post. Let's just say that we've been
bizzie ... bizy ... busy! And for full disclosure, it's not "we" but only me ... Mary-Alice ... who will be writing this, or trying to anyway. I suppose what seems terrifying about this silly little blog is where am I supposed to find the time to do this ... and is anyone going to really read this? Don't worry about it, I tell myself and ... take the plunge!

So perhaps ... some day ... a person or two will stumble across this little blogspot and more will follow in the days to come. So please, I beg for your help to get me started ... ask questions, add comments ... just something for motivation because I actually do think that this could be "fun", something different to tackle, something different to do after a long day of work. And for those that truly know me, I do like to talk ... just need some prodding from time to time. Especially when in new situations ... especially when I'm "testing the waters" ... especially when I haven't a clue as to what I'm doing but willing to ... TAKE THE PLUNGE! (Just watch out for those "under-toads")

What an interesting week! With fewer daylight hours, an afternoon of snow (oh yes Virginia, there is snow in New England) and a distinct crispness in the air to match the grey skies, we've found a few moments to gather with friends, share a few laughs and just enjoy each other's company. In the "craziness" of the past few days, we've found these moments of serenity make us more grateful for our lives than all the money in the world. To understand the joy of each day try this - listen to the crunch of leaves under your feet, breathe in and exhale - see your breath?, run your finger along a frosted surface, share a meal you made at home, knit brightly colored socks, and smell the smoke rising from your or your neighbor's chimney.

The positive side of what happened to the economy last fall (and through 2009) is we all had an opportunity to assess our lives. The happiest stories we've heard have been about people who were laid off, and with a family to support had not thought about taking a chance to do something they'd maybe always dreamed of. Now they were being given a chance. That's right, a chance ... like the man we know who was let go from a communications firm when they downsized and he went to work at a bakery. He loves it and while he is not making as much, he is rich with life. A woman we know lost her job event planning and has been walking dogs. Last time we saw her during one of our morning walks, her biggest concern - how to manage her time with so many clients.

So rather than shopping at malls or online sites for name brands, people are looking to craftsmen. The words craftsman and artist are part of our vocabulary now. At Children's Couture we are fortunate our clients (really our extended family), who have ordered from us since we opened shop, are knowledgeable about our distinctive edge as well as the attention to detail and quality we put into each and every piece. In addition, they know they are getting a "story" behind their purchase, one that will last as long as the piece ... which is for generations to come. Their children even notice, and like, the difference!

Precious Little Things

This morning's walk was a treat for us and a chance to take advantage of the fewer daylight hours. Our walk was fun, full of love and laughter. We get so busy, so sometimes a morning walk is the perfect rebuttal. A precious little thing we can savor.

With November here (did you remember to set your clock back!??) our season is about to get really busy. With neighbors beginning to hang holiday flags, turkey orders being placed (or at least thought about), and Thanksgiving recipes abound in our favorite magazines it is time to break out the holiday lists. We are and so are our friends and customers. Who to get what for, sizes, favorite colors, and so forth and so on. Every year we get busier, but we love it. Mary-Alice is happiest while meticulously stitching and sewing, designing and brainstorming the next pairing in her design studio.

Lately she has been working on precious little things which seem to make not only her but her clients giddy. Children Couture's miniature hats have certainly been garnering a lot of attention lately. Originally Mary-Alice designed them as holiday ornaments, but we are told by customers they are used as well for dressing up a doll and attaching to a package. A wonderful surprise! An added bonus, the ornaments can be made in any fabric selection to go with one's home decor, express a personal style, or to coordinate with a holiday decorating theme.

The Year I was a Fairy Godmother

This photo sits on Mary-Alice's living room shelf next to books from her childhood. It is was taken when she was in the first or third grade; who can remember!??! She'd managed to get the role of Cinderella's Fairy Godmother in the school play. Her mother sewed the costume; lace, tulle and a lovely hooded cape, then created a magic wand from a dowel painted silver, a doily and some glitter. Feeling so, so lovely she wore this for the following Halloween. Happy Halloween to everyone.

Do Good Feel Great

Some pieces are meant to be kept forever, held on as heirloom pieces passed down generation after generation possibly being lent to one's dearest friend or relative after time. Children's Couture pieces tend to be in that category. However, so many other pieces are not - relics taking up valuable space. Rental space one might think, and who pays rent on an unused space? Well, Mary-Alice finally decided it was a good enough time as any to tackle the clearing out of the clothes and shoes closet. The switch from summer to fall/winter can no longer be denied so into storage trunks go sundresses, sandals, short sleeve blouses, and capris. Into garbage bags went pieces that have not been worn in two years, pieces that no longer fit, and pieces that well just never did fit just right and/or fit the right occasion.

Rather than toss those garbage bags into the trash we carted them off to Goodwill. As the popular saying goes, "one man's trash is another's treasure," or something along those lines. Goodwill Industries accepts clothing, children's toys, furniture, computers and appliances in good/working condition.

A place we've donated suits to in the past is Dress for Success, a nationwide organization that provides professional wear for those who may not be able to afford the "polished look" for an interview. They also accept slacks, jackets, blouses/tops, shoes, and accessories.

Whatever you do, donate a piece or two and help someone out this season ... it won't cost you a dime and will provide someone else such a sense of "relief" ... that is definitely worth a million bucks!!

As creative individuals who appreciate culture wherever we go and are especially keen on those slanted in a fashionable direction we scan museum websites from time to time in search of the next show we need to see. We say need, because when you are as passionate about a craft as we are and respect so much what other designers and muses are doing it really is more of a need than a want. A new exhibit we were so excited to read about and as thrilled to share is at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA through February 7, 2010 is Rare Bird of Fashion: The Irreverent Iris Apfel

The exhibit presents more than 80 dramatic ensembles from the personal collections of legendary tastemaker and style icon Iris Apfel. Known for her eclectic mixing of haute couture with costume jewelry and exotic baubles, Apfel has inspired bold developments in the fashion industry through her spirited irreverence and pitch-perfect taste. Now in her 88th year, she continues to challenge visual culture with radical juxtapositions of disparate influences. These spectacular and unexpected wardrobe combinations are exhibited with inventive staging and playful displays that underscore Apfel's inexhaustible creative spirit.

Recently a friend shared a story about shopping for boots. She had been looking for a pair of grey boots for a while, not intensely just now and then peeking into shops. The other night after dining with friends she walked past a shop with what she thought was the perfect pair and for only $59.00! Half-way to the register she paused and recalled a conversation we had not that long ago about investment pieces and put them back. They were not real leather and she was about to go on a trip where there could well be a shop with the perfect pair, albeit more expensive, and that pair would have a story attached. The purchase would become an experience and the feel of the real leather crafted by a master craftsman would add a personal touch.

We have a lot of customers who return to us for the same reasoning our friend used. They are choosing quality over quantity. Spending more, but investing in a piece that has an "organic" story behind it and will last a long time. Fortunately our pieces are reasonably priced and machine washable so our customers can enjoy them without even a tinge of guilt.

Recent economics have caused consumers to pay attention more than ever to what they are spending their money on. Rather than purchasing three blazers they can only get one, same thing with shoes, jeans... Each circumstance has cause for different reasoning, but in the end we hope fine craftsmanship and an experience/a story will win over the short term.

While in Fredericksburg, we took a drive to Charlottesville, VA, home of the University of Virginia. David and Beverly's granddaughter, Jocelyn, is a first year student there and gladly met us for lunch, then provided a wonderful guided tour of the beautiful UVA campus. She has only been there for a few weeks but was so knowledgeable about the campus, architecture and it's founder, Thomas Jefferson. Impressive!

Mary-Alice here. After just one day at Bethany, we get back into the car for a sidetrip to visit relatives, David and Beverly Brumbaugh, in their new home in Fredericksburg, VA. Though I always tell them they are not old enough to be my parents, I do fondly refer to them as my "parents without punishment" as they have always been a part of my life and I am grateful for that. They recently moved from Arlington, VA to Fredericksburg, VA where we spent two days enjoying their gorgeous new home. It is beautiful, spaceous and not far from the historic downtown of Fredericksburg, with cobblestone streets, chic boutiques and charming restaurants.

Please pardon our absence from posting the past two weeks as Children's Couture has been on vacation, at long last. Our destination: The Delmarva Peninsula, specifically Bethany Beach, Delaware, where Mary-Alice's relatives generously offered the use of their townhouse, just a block from the beach. With the car packed we headed south to Victorian Cape May, New Jersey (the southern tip of NJ), a charming town of Victorian houses and shops. But no time to sightsee here as our goal was to catch the the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, which would transport us across the busy mouth of the Delaware Bay to historic Lewes, Delaware (the northern tip of the Delmarva Peninsula).

Full disclosure, Mary-Alice is not fond of long bridges and prone to motion sickness. Not to worry, the ride was uneventful. During the relaxing 90 plus minute ride we spotted dolphins and seagulls playing amongst the many tankards and shipping vessels that travel through these busy shipping lanes.

Prior to arriving in Lewes, Delaware, on the ferry, we passed a noteworthy spit of land jutting out into the sea; Cape Henlopen State Park. Once we depart the ferry, we headed out to explore the picturesque shoreline.

Starting this weekend Children's Couture will participate in New Hampshire ShowHouse 2009, an event to help raise money for the Boys & Girls Club of the Lakes Region. A fun event, it brings together some of the most talented decorators and craftsmen in New Hampshire for a good cause. Creative talents working together with the intent of creating amazing looking rooms to inspire viewers. Between September 19 - October 18 the show home will be open to the public (buy your tickets in advance) so anyone can see the results, and of course do good! Depending on timing you might even score some good decorating advice for the price of admission. Not bad!

We are proud to be among the designers invited to help decorate a room in the house by providing apparel and accessories to use in the little girl's bedroom being decorated by Lorie Taylor of Lake Style Interiors.

I am fascinated by Martha Stewart. During approximately the same time it takes me (Mary-Alice today) to get up and brew a pot of coffee, she has painted her kitchen, started a quilt and made puppets (and really likely designed a mobile puppet theatre). Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating and she only finished one puppet.

I consider myself a master gardener, but not the most cooking-friendly person. In a pinch sure I can help out and find it fun, a sort of expedition. With summer over and fall soon to be under way I'm looking forward to holiday festivities and cupcakes (don't the two go hand in hand??). Getting lots of back to school orders. Hard to believe it is already September 1! Does anyone else say "Rabbit" the morning of the first day of the month? To some it means good luck is coming. Whether or not, Labor Day certainly is. So are carpooling schedules, after-school programs, reading lists, trunks filled with backpacks and notebooks, cheerleading tryouts (actually those may have wrapped up by now), and marching band practices. When we take into consideration all busy moms and dads have to do it is no wonder our clients love us for thinking of them and making every piece machine washable. Can you imagine having to find the time to hand wash your child's clothing? Okay, maybe once in a while.

Another League of NH Craftsmen's Annual Fair is in the history books and now, Children's Couture is "home sweet home." The Showroom reopened last Thursday, August 13th and will be open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10-4 for the remainder of the year. Please stop by when in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire ... we'd love to see you. New fall and winter pieces will be added to the line on a weekly basis come September, with many new styles to thrill your tween. It's never too early to shop for the holidays! Our final day at the League of NH Craftsmen's Fair. Feeling good about seeing a lot of familiar faces, making new friends, checking in with fellow craftsmen and the weather! Keeping fingers and toes crossed it will hold out till we've got the car packed this afternoon.

A return customer in a Let's Dance Sundress and matching Garden Party Hat in a dot fabric. She and her mom love the playful fabrics, details handiwork and that the items are machine washable. This little girl loved her dress and hat so much she wore them out of the booth. My kind of shopper!

Blogging to you from the 76th Annual N.H. Craftsmen's Fair at the Sunapee Resort in Newbury, N.H. The organizers say the fair goes on rain or shine and let me tell you it really does! We delivered and set up the booth frame-work on Thursday, August 30. Quick, but important thank you to our friend John who helped us! What a trooper! It was a nice sunny day and everything went smoothly much as you can imagine to our relief! Friday we went back with more clothing and display pieces and...well the minute we got into the tent and our booth space, the skies opened up and it poured non-stop from 10:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We thought about getting a canoe to ride the river (no joke) going through the middle of our booth. We managed to stick it out and when we found out a few booths in other tents were flooded we realized how fortunate we were the situation was not worse in our space.

Happily everything and as far as we know everyone is back on track. The sun has been out all day and not a spot of rain anywhere!

Prepping for League of N.H. Craftsmen's Fair

The past several years I have enjoyed the honor of participating in The League of N.H. Craftsmen's Fair, one of the finest, most prestigious craft events in the country today. Prepping for this annual nine-day event is something else, something worth sharing I think. This year's fair is scheduled August 1-9 at the Mount Sunapee Resort in Newbury, N.H. between 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. daily (rain or shine).

Prepping for the Fair means frantically making display pieces, finishing any new pieces, inventory and all accessories and mini hat ornaments. Hundreds of new items to select from with a price range for everyone.

Of course it is all worth it when I see familiar faces who have eagerly awaited my return with new items for their grandchildren, daughters, nieces... Really it seems more like play than work once I'm set up and the gates open.

I hope to see you there! In the meantime, some pictures of my work/fun space.

Rudi Dalton

August, 1996 - July, 2009

Rudi, beloved companion of Mary-Alice and Tom Dalton passed away Wednesday, July 15.

He was affectionately known as Rudi Underhouse during his younger (and smaller) years, because he went under the house to hunt a lot. He spent his days in the studio and nights stretched out with Mary-Alice on the sofa. You opened the door and there he was.

As busy as we are in our daily lives, it is important to take the time to sit on the floor or at least bend down and pat your furry friend. Let them know they are loved. I am so glad I took five minutes to do this last Wednesday morning.

He leaves an empty space and many fond memories. We loved him so.

As we continue to prep for the League of NH Craftsmen's Fair the need for ice cold sugary treats has become a bit shall we say necessary. What fun is life without a little ice cream. Whether a scoop or a pint, on a cone or in a (large) bowl ice cream is the best ever way to cool off in the sun. We are not picky. Locally we are big fans of Jordon's Ice Creamery in Belmont, but any place with an ice cream window will do. Favorite flavors run the gamut from traditional chocolate or mint chocolate chip to the more adventurous chocolate wasabi or chocolate cheesecake.

A childhood favorite was peach, boy was that good!

We are excited to announce Cirque du Soleil is coming to New England! After touring the world the show Alegria will arrive in Connecticut and Massachusetts in August.

Alegria, which takes is name from the Spanish word for joy and jubilation, is a baroque and operatic production featuring flamboyant costumes, extraordinary lighting and an elaborate set. The international cast of 55 acrobats, musicians, singers, clowns and characters create a two-hour spectacle of breathtaking acrobatics. A fun fact for us! 1,000 buttons and jewels are used for the two singers' costumes alone!

Cirque du Soleil is a Canadian entertainment company whose mission is to invoke the imagination, provoke the senses and evoke the emotions of people around the world. It started in a small town in Canada with a band of colorful characters who roamed the streets on stilts, juggling, breathing fire and playing music. Today the company has thousands of employees, including more than 1,000 artists, in over 40 different countries.

Here are a few more ideas for dad this Father's Day.

Chef Dad - Make him breakfast or pack a picnic with fresh goodness from a farmers’ market or a family run farm stand. Remind him how much you love him in the kitchen with something from a local cookware shop. Our favorite is Things Are Cooking in Concord, NH.

Cosmopolitan Dad - See a local exhibit. In Manchester, NH we recommend the Currier Museum of Art. Afterwards enjoy a nice early and delicious dinner at Richard's Bistro. Fabulous food, drink and service.

Gardening Dad - What better way to spend a sunny day together than gardening side by side. We continue to find an impressive selection of plants at The Ledgeview Greenhouses in Loudon, NH. For cutters, baskets, and shovels we prefer Agway.

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY ... dad certainly would want his girls to look good so definitely check out Children's Couture for all your child's clothing needs. And when in the area, please stop by the Showroom (full and open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10-4) and take a stroll through the gardens on the adjoining properties ... annual, perennial and vegetable gardens abound. If we are not in the Showroom we will be in the garden side by side having a good time.

Reduce, reuse, recycle. At Children's Couture we think local and sustainable. What does this have to do with children's books?

As children most of us collected stuff. Piles of it shoved under the bed and into chests. Upon rediscovering some of this "stuff" it becomes obvious a trip to Goodwill is on the agenda. While we have disposed of countless playthings, however the books remain.

Thanks to our parents or teachers we were introduced to books in which characters and places brought us joy and helped us develop a sense of imagination. Certainly Eloise influenced Mary-Alice Dalton, the creative force behind Children's Couture. Eloise is the main character in a series of children's books about a six-year-old girl who lives in the Plaza Hotel in New York City with her nanny and pets. Sometimes the best stories are not the most recent. Like Children's Couture outfits, Eloise and similar stories are classic.

You Are My Sunshine Hat

Every day I observe a new change to my landscape. Little flowers budding out of the ground. Patches of purple, yellow and white dotting my lawn. This is the season that most inspires me. Warm days growing longer filled with gardening, outdoor music concerts, homemade ice cream, the banging of screen doors, and sewing.

Longer warmer days mean children spending more time in the sun, which means the need for a little shade. What may not be accomplished solely by a large tree or porch cover I hope to provide with my Sunshine Hat. Pretty, fun, machine washable, and when combined with the appropriate sunscreen (by parents discretion) perfect for a day at the beach or in the garden.
